Group SERVE has been a new addition to the SERVE Nazareth programme this year and we have been delighted with how God has developed and blessed people through it.

Each group has a placement (or a few placements, depending on size and duration of the group!) where they serve and build relationships with local people. The placements can vary from helping paint a house used for a retreat ministry, to working with staff at the Nazareth Village, to helping with Occupational Therapy in our hospital or with Kids’ camps through our ministry partners. It really is as varied as the unique and wonderful people who come here!

At the end of each group’s time here, we hold an event (often a barbeque) for the group to invite their new friends and colleagues to share in. It is a great end to their time here and a chance for us to connect and spend time with new people, while celebrating the group’s experiences here.

In May we had a group from Trinity Western University, lead by Chelsea Ayers and Emily Gemmell. Their group of six had the gift of connecting with people, and here’s what they said about their time here:

Dan

All of my expectations and goals were realized above and beyond what I had expected. Each day God brought new lessons and opportunities for me to learn about people and culture that is not like my own. My eyes were opened to a new reality in the Bible.

Lindsay

I learned that God is the God of this city, no matter how few or many Christians, no matter what political ties or divides. I have learned that as awful as persecution and being a minority is, it makes these people’s faith so beautiful and admirable. It gave me courage and hope. I also have learned I love Arab culture, language, people and baklava.

Emily Z

My greatest expectations could not have encompassed what an amazing experience this has been. We gained a lot of respect for Arab culture. It has been a huge blessing to get to know the people in this city. I’ve also learned about the need for unity among Christians of all denominations. I have learned a lot about community from these people, as well as their genuine friendliness.
